NBC announced the decision a day after Williams said he would temporarily step away from NBC “Nightly News.”

The network is looking into Williams’ admission that he falsely reported the helicopter he was riding in was hit by rocket fire in 2003 while covering the Iraq war.

Williams had spread the story of his helicopter being under attack during a previous “Late Show” interview with Letterman.
