FEMA Holding Public Forums On Bergen County Flood Maps

HACKENSACK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Officials with the Federal Emergency Management Agency are answering residents' questions Tuesday and Wednesday about new flood maps in Bergen County.

Forums for people in high-risk flood zones will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in Hackensack and in Mahwah on Wednesday, WCBS 880's Peter Haskell reported.

In the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy, FEMA flood maps were updated.

"Some homes that may have not fallen in a flood zone on the map prior could find themselves now in the flood zone," said Bergen County Freeholder Steve Tanelli.

"It's an opportunity to have some input before these maps are finalized," he added.

Tanelli said the forums will offer information about elevation and flood insurance "to try to help people navigate the process."

Moonachie and Little Ferry were submerged during Sandy, but other towns, such as Saddle Brook, Garfield and Lodi, are also vulnerable.
