FDNY Rescues 2 Teens From Ice On Little Neck Bay In Queens

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Rescue crews rushed to Little Neck Bay in Queens on Saturday after two teenagers found themselves stuck on the ice several hundred feet from shore.

As CBS2's Matt Kozar reported, firefighters in waterproof, insulated suits used a ladder to pull the boy and girl to safety.

"I think they panicked when they started seeing the water come up over the ice," said Mary Marino.

Marino lives along the bay and recorded the rescue on her cell phone.

"(Have you seen anyone try to walk on the ice before?) Yes, several times we have people walking in the ice," she said.

At one point, firefighters said the boy fell into the frigid water. Firefighters rushed the teen to the hospital to be treated for exposure.

The incident is just the latest in a string of ice rescues this winter.

Just over two weeks ago, firefighters pulled an 11-year-old boy to safety after he tried to ice skate on the Bronx River. And a month ago in Central Park, firefighters practicing ice rescues witnessed a man fall through the lake in front of them.

"People think the ice is solid; it's not," Marino said.
