New Yorkers Fed Up With The Cold Jump On Planes Headed For Warmer Locales

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The cold weather has really gotten to some people. In upstate New York, Ithaca's visitors bureau temporarily told tourists to stay away. The website told tourists to check out the Florida Keys instead.

Ithaca received 71 inches of snow this season and its average temperature is 27.9-degrees.

The Visitors Bureau may have been onto something. CBS2's Meg Baker caught up with people who were headed out of town on Tuesday.

Travelers who say they can't take the cold anymore were calling it quits, and hopping on a plane to go warm their bones.

"We are going to try and warm ourselves up. It's been too cold for too long," Madison said.

At LaGuardia Airport travelers came in wearing their winter hats and gloves, but in their suitcases they were ready for spring and summer.

"Yesterday was 3 degrees and I was like, you know what I am over this. Lets go back down south," Danielle said.

Heading to Palm Beach, one woman said she is sick of the cold elements. She fell on ice on Tuesday morning.

"I do have a scrape on my knee. Quite embarrassing, but no one got it on tape," she said, "I'm done. I'm over the cold now."

Trips to Miami, the Caribbean, and cruises were all on the menu for New Yorkers who are sick of the cold.

"There's no doubt about it people are sick and tired of the cold weather and the best way to escape is to a warm beach destination," Courtney Scott, Travelocity, said.

Scott said that most fare sales launch earlier in the week.

"Avoid weekend departures. Avoid departing Friday, returning Sunday," she said.

The best deals right now are on cruises.

"A cruise deal. A last-minute cruise departing out of Miami for $500 a person," Scott added.

If you are sick of wearing snow boots and are ready to trade them in for flip-flops, experts say the best way to book on a budget is to leave on an off-peak day, like a Tuesday.
