Port Authority Seeks To Toss $400M Suit By Jersey City

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) - Attorneys for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey are in court arguing for the dismissal of a $400 million lawsuit over property in Jersey City.

Mayor Steven Fulop filed the lawsuit last year for what he claims are unpaid taxes, penalties and fees for dozens of properties in the city.

Among the Port Authority's properties in Jersey City are four PATH rail stations, a PATH command center and parts of the ports complex.

Fulop estimates property taxes would have historically yielded about $315 million in additional tax revenue and about $18 million per year.

Port Authority attorneys argued Wednesday that its PATH properties in Jersey City are for a public use and are statutorily exempt from property taxes.
