NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – A 13-year-old boy riding on his bicycle was struck by a car on the Upper West Side Tuesday.

The incident happened at around 2:45 p.m. at 77th Street and Columbus Avenue.

Witnesses told CBS2’s Dave Carlin the boy was headed to soccer practice when he was struck as he tried to beat the light. Witnesses told Carlin the boy was riding the wrong way on the street when he was hit.

WCBS 880’s Marla Diamond spoke with a woman who heard the incident as she walked home with her daughters.

“When I heard the thud, I heard a scream too,” she said.

The woman then saw the boy try to get up, but fall back down.

“We were all kind of traumatizing because I’m assuming my girls saw what I saw,” the mother said.

Police say the boy suffered a compound fracture and was taken to NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center.

The driver of the car that hit the boy remained at the scene.
