6-Year-Old Girl Dies, Mom Found Unconscious At Croton-On-Hudson Home

CROTON-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Authorities are investigating the death of a 6-year-old girl found unconscious at a home in Croton-on-Hudson.

Police responded to the Hastings Avenue home after receiving a call Sunday from the girl's father that he couldn't wake her up.

Lacey Carr's mother was also found unconscious inside the house, Detective Sgt. John Nikitopoulos said.

The mother, 52-year-old Kathleen Dymes, survived and remained hospitalized on Monday. Lacey was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The mother and child lived in the home of Lacey's grandfather, Nikitopoulos said. Authorities have ruled out carbon monoxide poisoning because the grandfather, who was home at the time, was OK.

Investigators said there are no signs of trauma, but foul play hasn't been ruled out, CBS2's Emily Smith reported.

"There's nothing suspicious. It was a well-maintained house," Nikitopoulos said.

State records show that a Kathleen Dymes, of Croton, has had a nursing license suspended twice; once in 2002 for stealing pain killers and again in 2012 for DWI and larceny, Smith reported.

Nikitopoulos would not comment further on the state records findings.

Neighbors said Dymes worked years ago as a nurse. She then had her daughter with David Carr. The couple didn't live together, but were in the process of moving into an apartment as a family.

"He and the mother chatted very often when I saw them," said one neighbor.

"I'm here almost every day and I see the family always having friends over for dinner and stuff like that," said one young man.

Neighbor Donald told 1010 WINS' Al Jones it was a quiet Sunday afternoon and didn't suspect anything was wrong until emergency vehicles came roaring down the street.

"It was a horrendous scene. There was ambulances, cop cars -- everything," he said.

Donald said Lacey was a "sweet little thing," WCBS 880's Marla Diamond reported.

"Used to yell over to us all the time. You couldn't help but love her," he said.

The village mayor said the Dymes family has been a mainstay in the community for years.

"Our hearts and prayers go out to all the extended family and all the friends and neighbors as well," said Mayor Leo Wiegman.

"The entire community is really distraught about this tragedy," said Village Manager Abe Zambrano. "It is affecting everybody."

Police said Carr's grandfather has already been questioned. Now, police want to speak with the child's father, but said he is understandably distraught and busy with funeral arraignments, Smith reported.

An autopsy and toxicology report are planned to help determine exactly what happened.
