NYC Food Truck Lunch: Flautas & Guacamole From Mexico Blvd.

Perry, the founder of New York Street Food, brings you his latest review on New York City street food.

Mexico Blvd was created by a father and son team from Mexico who spent time traveling around Mexico learning the various local cuisines. After moving to NYC and working in a few high-end restaurants, they started Mexico Blvd 3 years ago. With the truck's popularity, they recently opened a restaurant in Astoria called Chela & Garnacha.

We're more interested in lunch right now, and the Mexico Blvd food truck is on the agenda. They have excellent tacos and tortas on the menu, but we've had most of them before. What we haven't had are their flautas.

You can get 3 or 4 flautas for lunch, but we went for Especial #4, which was 3 flautas, guacamole and chips for $10. This was also a vegetarian meal, if that's important to you.

Starting with the guacamole, it was made just how we like it - with cilantro and raw onions, but no tomatoes. It was creamy with small chunks of avocado, and there were even chips left over after finishing the guacamole.

For the uninitiated, flautas are corn tortillas, and here they are filled with either potato or refried black beans. After being filled and rolled, the flautas are deep-fried. You can get flautas filled with meat at some Mexican places, but not here. They only serve vegetarian flautas at Mexico Blvd.

Once fried, the flautas are placed atop a bed of shredded lettuce, and topped with cotija cheese, sour cream, green salsa, red salsa and avocado salsa.

Yes, the flautas are as tasty as they sound. The potato flauta is a little plainer, while the black bean is more savory. Despite the 3 kinds of salsas, this dish is not spicy. If you enjoy heat, it can easily be requested at Mexico Blvd. We've had their spicy salsa, and it really packs a punch!

The Mexico Blvd truck parks in several neighborhoods for lunch. You can find their regular schedule here, but things can change quickly in the food truck world, so check Twitter here before heading over. Facebook is here, if that's your preferred method.

There are a bunch of Mexican food trucks in NYC, but Mexico Blvd is probably the best, in our opinion. The flavors are sharp and defined, and the quality of the ingredients is high. That might have something to do with the line of 10 people ahead of us, but don't let that dissuade you, it moves quickly.
