Evacuations Ordered In Ulster County Due To Forest Fire
CRAGSMOOR, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Evacuations were under way in upstate Ulster County Monday evening due to a major forest fire.
The fire started around 1 p.m. Sunday in Summitville, Sullivan County and moved east toward Ulster County, officials said.
Late Monday, the fire was burning in both the Roosa Gap Forest and the Shawangunk Ridge State Forest, officials said.
The fire had destroyed about 1,000 acres late Monday. The blaze jumped New York State Route 52, and thus, the entire Cragsmoor hamlet was in danger.
Thus, the Ulster County Sheriff's office ordered a mandatory evacuation for the entire Cragsmoor hamlet – Road A, Road B, Baxter Road, Cramer Road, Old Plank Road, and Schwabb Lane.
All evacuees were asked to relocated to the Walker Valley Fire Department station at 3769 Route 52.
Route 52 was closed throughout the area of Ellenville, just east of Monticello.
