Professor: Ticket Trap Near Prospect Park Generating Tens Of Thousand$ For NYC

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- New York City has been generating plenty of green near Prospect Park from just four parking spots.

As 1010 WINS' Juliet Papa reported Tuesday, Pierre was pulling up to Prospect Park West and 9th Street to one of the most expensive parking spaces in the city.

The bottom sign allows motorists to park there after 1 p.m., but there's another sign on top of that.

The top one says "No Standing April 1 to Sept 30," Papa reported.

"The top one? Ohhhhh, ok ok." Pierre said.

Greg Smithsimon, a sociology professor at Brooklyn College, took note of all the tickets in those four spots.

"For this whole stretch of this busy, crowded street a quarter of the tickets come from this little spot right here," he said. "In just six months the city makes about $72,000 in tickets, and it's probably the most valuable street real estate in New York right now."

The professor said he's asking anyone who has received a ticket to email him at GregSmithsimon@gmail.com and he will petition the Department of Transportation for better signage, Papa reported.

A spokesperson for the DOT said "While the current parking regulations are to support access in Prospect Park in warmer months, we are reviewing the current parking regulations and signage."
