Mahwah Police Continue To Search For Suspect In Attempted Child Luring

MAHWAH, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Police in New Jersey remain vigilant as they investigate a claim that a man may have tried to snatch a 9-year-old girl off the street last week.

The incident occurred last Tuesday evening in a townhouse complex in Margaret Court in Mahwah.

The girl told police a stranger offered her candy, then grabbed her arm and tried to pull her into his car, WCBS 880's Sean Adams reported.

The girl screamed and ran.

Detectives have been checking surveillance recordings, license plate scanners and names in the Megan's Law registry.

The suspect is described by police as a dark-skinned male in his late 30s, with a scar on the ride side of his face, and a gold or silver tooth in the front of his mouth, which was visible when he spoke.

The vehicle is described as dark, four door sedan -- possibly an an old Mitsubishi Gallant, with a blue license plaet.
