Divorce Lawyer Says Uptick In Business To Follow Same-Sex Marriage Ruling

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Divorce lawyers could see an uptick in business after the Supreme Court ruling to allow same-sex marriage in all 50 states.

Equality has two sides, New Jersey divorce lawyer John Patti told WCBS 880's Jim Smith.

"They're going to be entitled to the same benefits, but they're going to also be entitled to the same exposures," Patti said.

Alimony, child support, dividing assets when things go bad -- Patti said for states new to same-sex marriage unions, it will take about 10 years before divorce lawyers will start seeing extra business.

"It's going to take time for the people to work their way through the courts for this to happen. They don't happen overnight," he said.

But Patti said it will happen, it's human nature, Smith reported. His advice for anyone caught up in this historic moment:

"Before you get to me, before you get to a divorce attorney, make sure this is the person you want spend your life with," he said.
