Road Patrols Stepped Up In New York Over Holiday Weekend

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Police across New York state will be beefing up road patrols this holiday weekend.

State troopers say drivers this Fourth of July weekend can expect to see sobriety checkpoints and DWI patrols. Troopers say they also will be targeting the illegal sale of alcohol to minors.

"Our troopers will be out to identify and arrest any motorist who is driving drunk or impaired," New York State Police Superintendent Joseph A. D'Amico said in a statement. "Be safe this holiday weekend, allow plenty of time to travel, put down your cell phones and don't get behind the wheel if you have been drinking."

On Long Island, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone said there will be extra patrols on the roadways and the waterways.

"If you plan on drinking this holiday, it is very simple: do not drive," Bellone said. "Do not operate a car, do not operate a boat. Have a designated driver."

State Police last year arrested more than 180 people for DWI during the holiday weekend and issued more than 10,200 tickets.

Authorities say the average drinking and driving arrest costs up to $10,000.
