P.S. 22 Chorus Video For Teacher Fighting Breast Cancer Goes Viral

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A teacher on Staten Island battling breast cancer also inspires students to sing their hearts out.

And now, their song has gone viral, touching hearts all over.

As CBS2's Cindy Hsu reported, it was a surprise serenade for fourth grade teacher Adriana Lopez.

"When you feel lost, scared to death, like you can't take one more step, just take my hand, together we can do it," the students sang.

The chorus at P.S. 22 wanted their teacher to know how much they adore her.

"She's very strong. She's very courageous. She never gives up," said 12-year-old Justin Lanzo.

"She should stay strong because we all lover her," said Janelle Boakye, 12.

Lopez was diagnosed with cancer in January and went through her latest round of chemotherapy last Friday. Over the phone, she told Hsu how much the students' surprise meant to her.

"I love them so much and I can't thank them enough for it. I will always, always treasure that moment," she said.

The students performed the song "I'm Gonna Love You Through It" at the end of the school year. But it was just posted online and went viral.

Even the original singer, Martina McBride, tweeted out a message of thanks and love to the chorus and Lopez.

The students even changed some of the words to the song to tell their teacher's story.

"Cancer don't discriminate or care if you're just 48 with two kids who need you in their lives," the students sang.

Chorus director Gregg Breinberg said Lopez has shown amazing strength throughout her battle.

"She's the first one in the building. She's the last one to leave. She's so dedicated to her students," said Breinberg.

The special moment touched everyone.

"I was trying to hold back my tears," said 10-year-old Gabrielle Foster.

"She's really hopeful and she's going to fight for it and she's going to go through it, but she's not alone because we're here to help her," said Rachel Ildefonso, 10.

The student chorus has performed everywhere from the Academy Awards to President Barack Obama's inauguration.
