2 Adults, 5 Teens Charged In Slayings In Newark, East Orange

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Two adults and five teenagers have been arrested in connection with four recent homicides in Newark and East Orange, officials said Monday.

Felipe Amiral, 25, of Newark, was charged with the July 3 murder of Dario Rodrigues, 64. Rodrigues was stabbed to death on July 3 on Somme Street in Newark, according to the Essex County Prosecutor's office.

Amiral was arrested by Prosecutor's office detectives and the FBI Fugitive Task Force this past Friday, and was being held Monday on $1 million bail on charges of murder, felony murder, burglary and weapons offenses, prosecutors said.

Lance Herbert, 34, was charged with the June 24 shooting of Karieem Stamps, 46, of Newark, prosecutors said. Stamps was shot and killed on South 16th Street in Newark, prosecutors said.

Herbert was arrested this past Thursday and was charged with aggravated manslaughter and weapons offenses. He was being held on $500,000 bond, prosecutors said.

Four juveniles were also arrested and charged in the shooting that killed Ryan O. Edwell, 38, of East Orange, prosecutors said. Edwell was shot on July 16 and died 10 days later, prosecutors said.

The juveniles – two of them 16, one 17 and one 15 – were charged with aggravated assault, prosecutors said.

A fifth teenage defendant was charged in the murder of Qua-Shawn Chaney, 32, of Newark, prosecutors said. Chaney was shot and killed on July 17.

Jessie McNeil, 22, and two 17-year-olds were also charged last week in Chaney's murder, prosecutors said.

There was no indication that the homicides were related, prosecutors said.
