Pilot Killed When Stunt Plane Crashes In New York Air Show Practice At Stewart Airport

NEW WINDSOR, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A pilot was killed after his propeller-driven stunt plane crashed while practicing tricks for a weekend air show in Orange County Friday afternoon, state police said.

The crash happened around 2 p.m. at Stewart International Airport in New Windsor, where the New York Air Show is scheduled to take place this weekend, according to State Trooper Steven Nevel.

The GILES 202 aircraft appeared to have experienced an apparent structural failure. The plane entered into a steep dive and landed in a wooded area, police said.

The pilot was the only person in the plane. Officials are withholding his name until the notification of next of kin.

The FAA said the plane was an amateur-built aircraft.

The FAA and NTSB are both investigating.

On Thursday morning, a F-22 Raptor and F-16 Viper with the air show did a fly over near the Statue of Liberty and World Trade Center before heading up the Hudson River to Stewart Airport.

A woman at the air show box office said the show will go on as scheduled.

All established safety protocols will continue to be followed and enforced.
