1010 WINS Exclusive: Fence Along Fifth Avenue Being Considered As Security Measure For Papal Visit

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A fence along Fifth Avenue is one of the security measures under consideration for Pope Francis' visit to New York City later this month, 1010 WINS has learned.

According to sources, the fence will divide the sidewalk from 49th to 59th streets and those coming out to see the pope will need to be cleared by metal detectors to get street-side access, 1010 WINS' Juliet Papa reported.

Those who don't get clearance will be able to view the pope from the building side of the fence.

This plan is under consideration because of the pope's penchant for getting out of his vehicle to meet and greet the faithful.

On Tuesday, the mayor's office announced that the pope "will greet thousands of guests in a historic procession through Central Park along the West Drive" on Sept. 25.

The route will head across the 72nd Street roadway and proceed south along the West Drive.

To get a ticket, you will need to click here or call 311 from Thursday to Monday. The tickets will be awarded in a lottery.

Only New York state residents may apply for tickets. Residents of New Jersey and Connecticut may not.

"The pope's visit to New York is designed to give as many New Yorkers access as possible," said the mayor's office spokeswoman Monica Klein.

The winners will be notified Sept. 10.
