Pine Barrens Forest Fire About 50 Percent Contained
WOODLAND TOWNSHIP, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A forest fire that burned roughly 1,000 acres in New Jersey's Pine Barrens is about 50 percent contained, authorities said Tuesday morning.
The fire broke out on Monday near Byrne State Forest in Woodland Township, Burlington County, and later spread in Ocean County.
No property has been damaged and no homes are in the fire's path, New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection spokesman Larry Hajna said Tuesday.
Containment lines are expected to hold the fire at 1,000 acres.
The containment effort included about a dozen wildfire trucks and four bulldozers. Local fire crews also assisted, Hajna said.
Dry conditions and a breeze made controlling the fire challenging, officials said.
Officials are warning residents in surrounding communities that they may smell smoke.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
