NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Central Park played host to a concert with a purpose and a crowd of tens of thousands on Saturday.

As 1010 WINS’ Carol D’Auria reported, the 2015 Global Citizen Festival was held on the park’s Great Lawn.

Security was very tight with VIPs like Vice President Joe Biden, his wife, and first lady Michelle Obama in attendance.

Though the concert was free, in order to obtain a ticket folks had to spread the word about world hunger either by going on social media or writing to a member of congress.

Kailyn Hart came from Florida to attend the event.

“We had to sign petitions and email senators; send things out on Twitter and get the word out that we were trying to end poverty,” she told WCBS 880’s Kelly Waldron. “Rewarding people for doing positive things will definitely make a better generation.”

Elena, of Nyack, scored a ticket and said world hunger is an issue she is passionate about.

“Just because it’s not something that you deal with, as a society we should care that other people are suffering in the United States and around the world. And if everyone does a little bit to help then we can make a difference,” she said.
