Candidates Madeline Singas, Kate Murray Trade Barbs Ahead Of Nassau District Attorney Vote

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- On Tuesday, voters in Nassau County will choose their next district attorney.

Acting Nassau District Attorney Madeline Singas, a Democrat, said she's pushing for a new law to charge heroin dealers with homicide in fatal overdose cases.

"We're working to make sure that we choke off supply," Singas said.

Meanwhile, Republican Kate Murray said if she's elected, no diversion programs for heroin dealers will be offered -- only harsh sentences, WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported.

"I'm going to be very, very tough on drug dealers who are pushing these drugs on our children," Murray said.

But Singas said Murray, who is currently Town of Hempstead supervisor, lacks experience.

"My opponent has never walked into a criminal court room, has never tried a criminal case," said Singas.

Murray said as supervisor, she's dealt with "A government that is about six times the staff of the district attorney's office," and added that she feels she has the experience and leadership for the job.
