Mets' Matt Harvey Wins NL Comeback Player Of The Year Award
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Mets pitcher Matt Harvey has been named the National League Comeback Player of the Year.
Harvey missed all of 2014 after undergoing Tommy John surgery.
The 26-year-old made 29 starts and threw 189 1/3 innings in the regular season. He was the co-ace of New York's staff along with Jacob deGrom, going 13-8 with a 2.71 ERA. He struck out 188 and walked 37.
There was some question as to how much Harvey would pitch in the postseason -- or if he would pitch at all -- but the fiery competitor silenced all critics and was excellent in the playoffs. In four starts he went 2-0 with a 3.04 ERA. The former All-Star struck out 27 and walked eight in 26 2/3 innings pitched.
In Game 5 of the World Series against the Royals, with the Mets facing elimination, Harvey pitched eight scoreless innings. He came out for the ninth and issued a walk and a double before being relieved by closer Jeurys Familia. His brilliant effort was wasted when Kansas City tied the game in the inning and later won it in 12.
Rangers designated hitter Prince Fielder won the award in the American League. The six-time All-Star hit .305 with 23 home runs and 98 RBIs. Last season with Texas -- his first with the organization -- he hit just .247 in 42 games.
