KKK Fliers Found On Cars In Hampton Bays

HAMPTON BAYS, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Some Long Island residents are upset after finding recruitment fliers for the Ku Klux Klan on their cars.

The fliers were left overnight after Halloween on vehicles on Gardenia Avenue and School Street in Hampton Bays, WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported.

One resident took the flier and went to the police, who are investigating.

"I guess everyone has the right to express their opinion, but we're not interested," he said. "And we're upset that they would put it on the cars. It's a quiet neighborhood. As I spoke to my neighbors, they were all upset also."

A neighbor told Hall: "They're not going to stop ignorance. That's about it. They do it at 3 o'clock or in the wee hours of the morning. What does that tell you?"

One woman said her organization, Neighbors in Support of Immigrants, is working to try to stop hate.

"There is also a larger immigrant population in Hampton Bays, and there is a reaction to that in the community," she said. " ... We want to help people who are scared. "

It's not the first time KKK fliers have been distributed in Hampton Bays. Pamphlets were also circulated in the hamlet in 2014.
