Man Faces Charges In Crown Heights Police-Involved Shooting

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A man wounded in a police-involved shooting in Brooklyn is facing several charges.

Authorities charged 24-year-old Kareem Thomas with weapons offenses and reckless driving in connection with the incident that occurred in Crown Heights.

NYPD Chief of Patrol Carlos Gomez said it all started early Wednesday afternoon when a police officer on Empire Boulevard saw a white Mustang go speeding by.

The officer followed the Mustang with his lights and sirens on along Empire Boulevard to Brooklyn Avenue, where the driver crashed into a parked truck, police said.

Gomez said the suspect then got out and ran with a gun in his hand. The officer gave chase. At Montgomery Street, Gomez said the suspect fell and dropped the gun on the ground.

The officer warned the suspect not to pick up the gun, but Gomez said when the suspect reached for it, the officer fired his weapon and shot him once in the stomach.

Police said a loaded gun was recovered at the scene.

Thomas was taken to Kings County Hospital, where he remains in stable condition.
