Southampton Councilman Admits To Peddling Prescriptions Oxycodone

SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A town councilman in Southampton, Long Island pleaded guilty Tuesday to federal criminal charges, alleging he conspired with others to peddle oxycodone pills and prescriptions for cash.

Councilman Bradley Bender pleaded guilty Tuesday after surrendering to federal authorities at U.S. District Court in Central Islip.

Prosecutors alleged Bender received phony prescriptions for oxycodone from a physician assistant. They allege he filled the prescriptions and then traded the pills for cash and steroids.

The physician assistant was also arrested and has pleaded not guilty.

Authorities said the pills were later illegally sold on the street.

Bender was elected as a Southampton town councilman in 2013.

Southampton Town Supervisor Anna Throne-Holst did not immediately return a call for comment.
