Hot Holiday Shopping Tips: Non-Toy Alternatives For Kids

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Looking for a great gift without adding more clutter to your home?

CBS2's Brian Webb took a look at some non-toy gifts that might even bring you and your family closer together this holiday season.

Kids of all ages paste, paint and put together art projects all day long. Some of those can even turn into Christmas presents, like hand painted picture frames.

"We paint the frames, the kids get insanely messy and they get to take home something, that's not, you know, a pair of socks or something," said parent Scott Drummond.

Toys, games and electronic gadgets may still dominate the Christmas tree landscape, but there are plenty of non-toy alternatives to consider.

For starters, arts and crafts projects that parents can take part in with their children.

"Anytime you can create a memory with your child, it's sort of the gift that keeps on giving because you have the product that they made that they are proud of, but it's the memory that lasts," said Lindsey Peers, with The Craft Studio.

A few more non-toy gift ideas include:

  • Personal photo book
  • Gift certificate
  • Art supplies
  • Museum membership
  • Mommy/daddy dates
  • Show tickets
  • Books
  • Classes/lessons
  • Redecorating their bedroom
  • Magazine subscription

"Then each month that's a gift that keeps on giving and I find kids really like that," said parenting expert Ericka Katz.

The ultimate goal is to create an experience to spark your child's imagination and get some quality time together as part of the process.

And don't forget, kids love to open presents so whatever gift you give them make sure to wrap it up so they can enjoy finding out what's inside, Morgan reported.
