2.1-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Near Ringwood, New Jersey

RINGWOOD, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Some New Jersey residents were rattled awake early Saturday morning when a small earthquake hit in Passaic County.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the epicenter of magnitude-2.07 quake, which hit just before 1 a.m., was roughly 2 miles northwest of Ringwood. Officials said it could be felt in Mahwah and in some towns across the New York border in Rockland County.

At Skyline Pizza in Ringwood, everyone was talking about the overnight quake.

"At first, I thought a bomb might've gone off in the city or something," resident J.T. Somwaru told CBS2's Brian Conybeare. "I didn't really know what to think."

Somwaru said he was shocked when the ground started rumbling just before 1 a.m.

"It was kind of crazy," he said. "It was like a huge boom and the ground started shaking a little bit."

Jackie Thomas was watching TV with her boyfriend and thought a burglar broke into the house.

"I had my dog there so I thought if someone was in the house, maybe the dog would bark so we turned off the TV and just stopped for a minute and it stops and we weren't sure what it was," she said.

Eddie Valentin didn't know an earthquake rattled his normally quiet community until he woke up in the morning.

"I know we are on the Ramapo fault and it's the second time and I slept through both of them so I guess I'm a pretty good sleeper," he said.

Another man named Ryan said he woke up with an unsettling feeling.

"There was a shake. I feel the whole house shake," he told 1010 WINS' Darius Radzius.

It also shook a woman named Marge, who was in bed when the quake struck.

"I was getting ready to watch 'Hawaii Five-O,' and I heard a bang, and it wasn't a bomb or anything," she said. "It sounded like an earthquake."

Fortunately, there was no damage reported at local stores or homes and nobody was injured.

A small earthquake also struck in the same area last August.
