Police: Queens Teen Found Dead In Bed Is NYC's First Murder Of 2016

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A 19-year-old woman found strangled to death in Queens is New York City's first murder of the new year, police said.

Joceline Romo was found beaten and strangled in her Woodhaven first-floor apartment shortly before 11 p.m. Friday, cops said. Police went to the home on 86th Street to respond to a report of an unconscious person.

Police said she was found face down in her bed.

Julie Bolcer, a spokeswoman for the city medical examiner's office, said the death was ruled a homicide after an autopsy revealed violence, including blunt force head trauma and compression of the neck.

Police said a man considered a suspect in the murder was undergoing treatment in the psychological ward of Jamaica Hospital.

The NYPD is expected to release its year-end crime statistics this week. As of Dec. 27, the city had recorded 340 murders for 2015, up from 326 at the same point in 2014.
