Ex-Rutgers Football Players Arraigned In Robberies, Assault

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Seven former Rutgers University football players have pleaded not guilty to charges related to home invasions and an assault.

The men entered their pleas during their arraignments Wednesday. Many of them have applied for admission into pretrial intervention programs, which offer alternatives to the traditional criminal justice process, the Asbury Park Press reported.

Tejay Johnson, Nadir Barnwell, Ruhann Peele, Razohnn Gross, Daryl Stephenson, Lloyd Terry and Delon Stephenson all appeared in court during the arraignment. Another former player, Andre Boggs, asked for a postponement until next month because he needs a new attorney.

Barnwell, Peele, Delon Stephenson, and Daryl Stephenson are charged in connection with an assault that left a 19-year-old male student with a broken jaw, police said. Gross, Terry and Boggs are charged in the home invasion robberies.

Johnson is charged in both the assault and home invasion robberies.

Johnson is scheduled to return to court Feb. 10, while most of the other former players are due back Feb. 26.

Rutgers dismissed Barnwell, Boggs, Peele, Delon Stephenson and Gross from the team just before the Scarlet Knights' season opener in September.
