Driver Facing Charges After Crash Kills 6-Year-Old New Jersey Boy

HIGHLAND PARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A driver faces charges after authorities say his car jumped a curb and struck two pedestrians on a sidewalk, killing a 6-year-old boy and injuring the child's mother.

Middlesex County prosecutors say Shang Zhen Huang faces two counts of aggravated assault stemming from Saturday afternoon's crash on Raritan Avenue and Columbia Street in Highland Park.

Chaim Kraus, 6, had been walking along the shoulder of the road with his 37-year-old mother when a car came out of a strip mall and hit a concrete container that was holding the trash can.

Kraus, and his mother were taken to a hospital, where the child died a short time later. His mother remained hospitalized in critical condition on Sunday. Her name was not released.

Huang was treated at a hospital for minor injuries.

It appears the boy was Jewish and was walking with his mother because of the Sabbath, TV 10/55 reported on Saturday.

Bail was set at $200,000 for the 21-year-old Piscataway man. It wasn't known Sunday if he has retained an attorney.
