BETHPAGE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) — A 4-year-old boy is in serious condition after police say the car he was riding in veered off the road and hit a tree on Long Island.
The boy’s grandfather was behind the wheel of a 2008 Nissan Altima on Monday afternoon when he lost control of the car, careened over sidewalk and slammed into a tree off Stewart Avenue and Arthur Avenue in Bethpage, police said.READ MORE: New Jersey Ranked 48th In List Of Best States In The U.S.
The boy, who was strapped into his child seat, and the 65-year-old grandfather were taken to a hospital. Police say both suffered head injuries. The grandfather’s injuries were not life-threatening.

Police say there was no apparent criminality and results of field and blood tests did not show any sign of alcohol or drug impairment.
