Hoboken Mayor: 'We Need To Make Sure Community Is Safe' During St. Patty's Day Bar Crawl

HOBOKEN, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer says the city will see if more needs to be done following the annual St. Patrick's Day bar crawl.

A total of 15 people were arrested Sunday, and 35 people were hospitalized including two police officers, during LepreCon.

Zimmer told WCBS 880's Kelly Waldron that the event is always a concern.

"The challenge is that it's a private event. It's not sponsored by the city, but obviously we need to make sure that the community is safe," Zimmer said.

Arrests increased by four over last year. One police officer suffered broken ribs, while another had a dislocated shoulder.

Fifty-four tickets were issued for everything from public drinking to disorderly conduct.

"The taxpayers of Hoboken, we're paying the overtime costs, we're paying the sanitation costs, we're paying all of those costs," Zimmer said.

The last arrest on Sunday happened when Christopher Smallwood, 24, of Warminster, Pennsylvania, surrendered to police on aggravated assault charges, police said. He was allegedly involved in a fight at a McDonald's at 2:30 a.m. Sunday, and while fleeing from the fight, he allegedly ran over two officers.

Smallwood, a former college football running back at Delaware Valley, evaded arrest until he turned himself in shortly before noon Sunday, police said.
