Pope Francis' Fiat Auctioned To Philanthropist For $300,000
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A Fiat that was used by Pope Francis during his visit to New York last September has been auctioned off to a philanthropist for $300,000.
Auction operator Charitybuzz announced Friday that philanthropist and renowned car collector Miles Nadal won the bid for the 2015 Fiat 500 Lounge Hatchback. The retail value for the car is $24,695.
The proceeds for the auction will benefit Catholic Schools, Catholic Charities, Catholic Relief Services and the Catholic Near East Welfare Association, Charitybuzz said.
Nadal, who has a collection of more than 130 cars and motorcycles, will meet with Cardinal Timothy Dolan to bless the car, Charitybuzz said.
Before the auction, the car appeared in the St. Patrick's Day parade in Manhattan.
He also visited Washington, D.C. and Philadelphia on the U.S. trip.
The archdiocese hasn't decided what to do with the second Fiat the pope used while in New York City.
