Yankees Pitcher Bryan Mitchell Sidelined At Least 4 Months
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — Yankees pitcher Bryan Mitchell will be sidelined at least four months following surgery to repair a broken bone in his left big toe.
The 24-year-old right-hander fractured the sesamoid bone while covering first base Wednesday during an exhibition game against Atlanta. He also suffered a Grade 3 turf toe. He was scheduled to be examined Monday by Dr. Robert Anderson.
"He had surgery yesterday," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said before Tuesday's opener. "He will be out at least four months. We're waiting for an exact timetable. ... We've got to find out exactly what that four months means."
Mitchell had a 6.37 ERA in two starts and 18 relief appearances last year, and the Yankees had planned for him to fill the long relief and spot starter role that had been held by Adam Warren, who was traded to the Chicago Cubs in the deal for second baseman Starlin Castro.
"Honestly, I really don't think it's has sunk in yet," Mitchell said Thursday. "It's tough right now. Just got to move forward for now."
