Robinson Cano On WFAN: 'A Lot Of Great Memories' From Yankees Days

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Robinson Cano returns to Yankee Stadium this weekend as his Seattle Mariners take on the Bronx Bombers.

Cano, who is batting just .189 but has five home runs, appeared as a guest on Mike Francesa's show Friday.

The second baseman who was named after Jackie Robinson said playing on Jackie Robinson Day, which is Friday, is one of his favorite days every year.

"We all should be proud of Jackie Robison," Cano said on WFAN. "We all should be proud to wear the No. 42. He's a guy that opened barriers. ... We are able to come, especially myself, outside of Dominican and be able to come and play at a high level. That's something that I will always be thankful, I'll always be proud to be named after Jackie and wear the No. 42."

Cano said he feels healthy after undergoing offseason hernia suergery.

"I'm able to use my hips," he said. "Like before, it was tough and had a really hard time using my hips."

The Mariners enter the series 3-6.

"It's early in the season," Cano said. "But I think we've got a great team. We've got a team that can compete with anyone."

Cano, who spent nine seasons with the Yankees, said he'll always have fond memories of playing in pinstripes.

"I had a lot of great moments here at Yankee Stadium," he said. " ... Here is where I won my first championship. It's like I say, I will never forget that I play here before and had a lot of great memories, not only myself but seeing Mariano (Rivera) retire, playing along with (Derek) Jeter ... Bernie Williams and all those guys and be able to play for Joe Torre. Those are a lot of memories that you always take with you."
