Cashless Tolls At Tappan Zee Bridge Kicking In This Weekend

TARRYTOWN, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Cashless tolls on the Rockland Side of the Tappan Zee Bridge will come online this weekend.

The new tolls were supposed to be activated at midnight Saturday, but it has been postponed to 12:01 a.m. Sunday because potential rains overnight.

Drivers will no longer have to stop or slow down at toll booths, keeping everyone moving at highway speeds, according to a video from the New NY Bridge.

There are high speed E-ZPass sensors on a steel framework over the Thruway. For those without E-ZPass, cameras will photograph the vehicle's license plate and a bill is then mailed to the vehicle owner.

Those who fail to pay five tolls over 18 months could have their vehicle registration suspended under a new state rule.

Officials are encouraging commuters to get E-ZPass. More than 80 percent of the 50 million vehicles that cross the Hudson River on the bridge each year already use E-ZPass.

The old toll plaza on the Westchester side will be torn down to make way for the new bridge landing.
