Police: Retired NYPD Officer Accidentally Shoots Self, Doctor In Oceanside

OCEANSIDE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A retired NYPD officer's gun accidentally went off Wednesday morning, injuring him and his doctor on Long Island, police said.

The incident happened at a doctor's office located at 3227 Long Beach Rd. in Oceanside just before 10:30 a.m.

The 77-year-old retired officer pulled out the licensed 10 mm semi-automatic pistol to show it to his doctor when the gun accidentally discharged a round, police said.

"Ten o'clock, it was very early, at the beginning of our day. We saw all the police cars, ambulances, SWAT team, crime unit, they were pulled into the parking lot," Marshalls Creek Spice Outlet Manager Hope Perlstein told CBS2's Raegan Medgie.

The bullet went through the ex-officer's thigh and then struck the doctor in the foot, police said. They were both taken to a nearby hospital. The doctor's name is Matthew Nester, according to witnesses.

Perlstein said she was busy working inside her store when all the activity drew her and her sister outside.

"There were five ambulances here, cop cars, the guys with the bullet proof vests... they took each person out," Ivy Lager said. "[The doctor] wasn't passed out, he was on gurney, he was texting someone while the were putting him in the ambulance"

The retired NYPD officer was brought to South Nassau Communities Hospital in Oceanside. A hospital spokesperson said the man is recovering and in stable condition.

There is no word if the doctor is also there, CBS2 reported.

"This could have ended very badly, but it didn't thank God," Perlstein said.

Police are not confirming the doctor's name. They are saying that both injuries are not life-threatening.

Police said no charged have been filed amid the ongoing investigation.
