'ClassPass' Users Say Recent Price Hike Is Giving Their Wallets A Workout

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A popular fitness membership known for making boutique studio classes affordable is getting backlash over a recent price hike.

As CBS2's Valerie Castro reported, ClassPass, the budget friendly fitness membership, took a hit Monday when the company announced a steep jump in cost.

"I don't know if I'll continue with it. It seems like a little bit too much," Colleen Banks said.

What was once a $125 a month membership is now $190 for existing members, and $200 for new members.

ClassPass allows members to try out unlimited boutique studios each month with a limit of three visits per studio.

Row House is one of those studios. They provide a unique indoor rowing experience.

"We've seen a lot of people who have come in through ClassPass and have decided this is a place for them, and this is a place they want to spend more time," Debra Strougo Frohlich said.

Ingrid Gomez liked it so much that she bought class packages directly from the studio.

"I found Row House through ClassPass so I'm grateful for that," she said.

But Gomez still has a ClassPass membership, at least for now.

"I think it's a huge increase, very short notice, and I'm thinking about canceling my membership," she said.

ClassPass called it the cost of doing business.

"We have to evolve our business model and adjust prices in order to create long-term sustainability with both our members and the market," the company said.

ClassPass also offers two other levels of membership that are less expensive, but come with limited options.
