Former Presidents Bush Have No Plans To Endorse Trump

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus called for the party to unite behind Donald Trump, but they will not be getting help from two former presidents.

Spokesmen for former Presidents Bush told CBS News that they have no plans to endorse Trump. Priebus declared Trump the "presumptive nominee" after Sen. Ted Cruz dropped out Tuesday night following the Indiana Republican priamry. Ohio Gov. John Kasich suspended his campaign Wednesday.

"President Bush does not plan to participate in or comment on the presidential campaign," Freddy Ford, a spokesman for former President George W. Bush, said.

Jim McGrath, a spokesman for former President George H.W. Bush, said, "At age 91, President Bush is retired from politics. He naturally did a few things to help Jeb, but those were the 'exceptions that proved the rule.'"

The Hill reported that the former presidents also won't take part in the Republican National Convention in July.

Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush dropped out of the Republican race in February and eventually endorsed Cruz.

Trump slammed George W. Bush earlier this year over the Iraq invasion, saying it was a "horrible decision" for the United States to go into the Middle East country in 2002.

"Iraq did not knock down the World Trade Center. Where did these people go when they got on the airplanes? … A lot of them went to Saudi Arabia, they didn't go back to Iraq, they went to Saudi Arabia. There are sealed documents right now that nobody wants allowed to be open that talk very much about this subject. I'd like to see what it says," Trump said at a CNN Town Hall in February.

George W. Bush campaigned for his brother earlier this year before Jeb suspended his campaign.

Trump now has a clear path to the nomination after both Cruz and Kasich called it quits.
