Troublesome Abandoned Home Being Demolished On Staten Island

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A family on Staten Island may finally be able to use their backyard after a long delay.

The Buildings Department issued a violation to a home at 1178 Mason Ave. on Friday after finding its chimney tilting over and its unstable roof threatening to collapse into a neighboring backyard.

Due to concerns of the building being structurally unsound, Keri Mullen said she and her family were not able to use their Moreland Street backyard and were even threatened with legal action if they stepped foot in the roped off area.

After CBS2 demanded answers, the building is slated for demolition and crews were on the scene Wednesday. The chimney of the home had been removed by noon.

The home was abandoned after it was damaged in Superstorm Sandy nearly four years ago and it was purchased by the state.
