Police the man being questioned was Marx’s ex-boyfriend. The woman’s family said the ex-boyfriend, Lamont Wright, was abusive and threatening.
Marks was found dead outside of Brooklyn Bridge Park by officers Monday night.
Police said she was shot and killed while walking to the bus stop after work, CBS2’s Magdalena Doris reported. As CBS2’s Steve Langford reported, the victim’s mother, Pauline Marks, said her daughter had trouble with Wright. She said he showed up at their apartment Sunday and assaulted her daughter in the hallway.
It was the second time she had filed a police report against him.
“If he couldn’t have her, nobody else could have her,” Pauline Marks told Doris. “She was supposed to go today to get an order of protection.”
Pauline Marks said she got a text from her daughter’s current boyfriend that something was wrong Monday night. Police said he was on the phone with her when Wright showed up outside her job at a restaurant at Pier 6 in Brooklyn Heights, wanting to talk.
“Michelle said someone was at her job with a gun,” Pauline Marks said. Her daughter was then fatally shot once in the head, police said.
Pauline Marks was shell-shocked as she got the text message at church.
“I was just praying – just praying that, you know, where she’s at, she’d be able to get away,” Pauline Marks said.READ MORE: NYPD: Man Seen On Video Mowing Down Brooklyn School Bus Driver Camella Gainer Now Under Arrest
Meanwhile, the victim’s co-workers, in grief, placed a small shrine in Michelle Marks’ memory at the spot where she was murdered.
“Michelle was a wonderful young lady,” one co-worker said.
“The nerve of you to take her life,” another said. “Who are you to take her life?”
There was also shock and disbelief as the victim’s neighbors learned she had been killed.
“That don’t even make no sense,” one woman told 1010 WINS’ Juliet Papa.
Another neighbor described Marks as “very outgoing and “very social.”
Investigators, including NYPD Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce, said earlier that they were making the case a priority.
The victim’s mother had a message for Wright.
“Lamont, you left a hurting family but you’re going to reap what you sow,” she said. “And I pray for you that God will have mercy on you, but you’re not gonna get away.”
