FORT PIERCE, Fla. (CBSNewYork) — The wife of the gunman who killed 49 people at a gay nightclub in Orlando told authorities she tried to stop her husband from committing the attack, according to CBS News.
A law enforcement source told CBS News that Noor Salman, the wife of Omar Mateen, went to the Pulse nightclub with him on at least one prior occasion. Salman has been interviewed by the FBI and is cooperating with the investigation.
A second source said that Mateen was in the general area of Pulse for several hours before he went into the nightclub and launched his attack.
Salman told investigators that Mateen had become radicalized in the last year, CBS News reported.
According to CBS News, Salman faces possible criminal charges.
Law enforcement sources also confirmed to CBS News that Mateen cased Disney World at least twice before the shooting — once in April and again this month.
His wife told investigators that the April trip was a family outing, but investigators believe Mateen may have been casing Disney and was not there on vacation, CBS News reported.
Meanwhile, Mateen’s wife returned to their home in Fort Pierce Monday night to pick up belongings, the first time she has been seen since the massacre. She needed a locksmith to help her get inside and left with a duffel bag, surrounded by police.
She then got into a car with a child. Family members have said the couple has a 3-year-old son, but it’s not clear if the child who was inside the vehicle was their son.
Mateen was previously married to another woman, Sitora Yusufiy, for several months before divorcing in 2011. She said he suffered from mental illness and abused her during their marriage.
