ORLANDO (CBSNewYork/CBS News) — The Orlando nightclub gunman and his wife were texting each other during the massacre at Pulse early Sunday morning, CBS News confirms.

CBS News reports that Omar Mateen and his wife, Noor Salman, exchanged texts while he was slaughtering 49 people at the gay nightclub.

Salman texted “I love you” to Mateen during the attack.

CBS News previously reported Salman was with Mateen when he bought ammunition. Investigators believe the wife drove with Mateen to case the nightclub before the attack.

Salman told authorities that she tried to stop her husband from committing the attack.

Salman has been interviewed by the FBI and is cooperating with the investigation.

Salman told investigators that Mateen had become radicalized in the last year, CBS News reported.

According to CBS News, Salman faces possible criminal charges.

During the massacre, he pledged allegiance to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria during calls to 911 and on Facebook.

This comes as Mateen’s former co-worker claimed that the gunman used to do steroids.

Margaret Barone, who was Mateen’s supervisor at a GNC in Jensen Beach, Florida, from February 2006 until November 2006, told CBS News that Mateen started taking steroids after he left to pursue law enforcement jobs.

“He blew up” and became “huge,” Barone told CBS News.

Barone said Mateen’s arms went from 20 inches to nearly 40 inches around while he was allegedly taking steroids. She explained to CBS News that Mateen would talk about taking steroids and was “doing too much.”

Barone stated that when she went out drinking with Mateen he would black out and become “crazy and violent” when he drank. She also said Mateen did not treat women well.

Mateen’s ex-wife accused him of repeatedly abusing her during their marriage.

Barone added that another GNC employee thought Mateen was gay.
