Woman Shot Dead, Man Turns Gun On Himself After Barricade In Carldstadt, New Jersey

CARLSTADT, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A man was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in Carlstadt, New Jersey Wednesday, after authorities said he shot and killed his wife and barricaded himself in his home.

Police found the body of Scott Sabia, 45 in the house at 505 Union St. in Carlstadt after a standoff involving a SWAT team, according to Acting Bergen County Prosecutor Gurbir Grewal.

As CBS2's Valerie Castro reported, it all started as a domestic dispute.

Police were first called at 6:19 p.m. for a report of shots fired, and found the body of Michelle Sabia, 44, on the front lawn. She had been shot and killed by Scott Sabia, her husband, Grewal said.

One woman said she heard the gunshots.

"I heard some yelling and it sounded like firecrackers, that's all I know," the woman said. "And when the police dragged me out of my house, they told me, you know, that he shot his wife."

Scott Sabia went into the house and locked himself in, Grewal said.

Carlstadt police rescued three children – ages 14, 11 and 9 – from the backyard of the house where the suspect was barricaded, Grewal said.

A SWAT team with full tactical gear was called to the scene at 7:25 p.m. and tried to contact Scott Sabia, with no response, Grewal said.

Police later entered the house and found Sabia's body inside with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Grewal said.

Neighbors said the couple had had some recent marital trouble.
