NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Ageism in Hollywood has been getting a lot of attention and now Renee Zellweger is once again being criticized.

But one fellow actress is coming out to defend the star, CBS2’s Jill Nicolini reported.

Zellweger is starring in the upcoming film “Bridget Jones’s Baby” and a trailer prompted a columnist for Variety to write an article titled, “Renee Zellweger: If She No Longer Looks Like Herself, Has She Become a Different Actress?”

The male author writes, “Her nose is thinner, or her lips are fuller … you can’t even quite put your finger on what the difference is.”

“It just seems incredibly snarky, mean and unnecessary,” Dr. Robi Ludwig, a psychotherapist and author of “Your Best Age Is Now,” said.

Ludwig said to criticize someone’s looks or to make the assumption that someone has had plastic surgery is unacceptable.

“We’re all going to age! That’s a very easy low blow,” she said.

Actress Rose McGowan defended Zellweger in an article she wrote for The Hollywood Reporter.

She wrote, “How dare you bully a woman who has done nothing but try to entertain people like you? What you are doing is vile, damaging, stupid and cruel. It also reeks of status quo white-male privilege. So assured are you in your place in the firmament that is Hollywood, you felt it was OK to do this. And your editors at Variety felt this was more than OK to run.”

“I love the fact that Rose McGowan came out and just spoke a truth. Said, ‘Hey, it’s not okay to bully someone who is innocent,'” Ludwig said.

Ludwig said harsh criticisms are relevant because we live in a culture that over-idealizes youth and the power that comes from it.

“At the end of the day Renee doesn’t care … she is getting paid,” one man said.

Ludwig also said it’s taking everyone longer to hit midlife since the aging timeline is changing. She believes society is on a slow path to changing their opinion on ageism.
