NYC Firehouse Featured In 'Ghostbusters' Is Being Renovated

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A landmarked New York City firehouse featured in the 1984 movie "Ghostbusters'' and an episode of "Seinfeld'' is undergoing a major renovation.

The city Department of Design and Construction says the $6 million project at the Fire Station Hook and Ladder Company No. 8 in Manhattan will be completed by next year.

The firehouse also was featured in the 2005 movie "Hitch.'' Lego has introduced a 4,500-piece "Ghostbusters Firehouse Headquarters'' set based on the building.

The firehouse's responders were among the first at the World Trade Center site on Sept. 11.

A specialist who will oversee the project says he'll ensure the historical elements of the 1903 building are preserved.

The three-story Beaux Arts-style firehouse was reduced 35 feet in 1914 to make room for the widening of Varick Street.
