New Agreement Will Help Dowling College Students Transfer To 6 Other NY Schools

OAKDALE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork)-- Students at the struggling Dowling College on Long Island will now have new opportunities for higher learning.

The newly announced agreement will help Dowling students transfer to six other New York schools. Long Island University will be the leading institution in the transfer agreement, WCBS 880's Mike Smeltz reported.

The other five schools are Farmingdale State College in East Farmingdale; St. Joseph's College in Patchogue and Brooklyn; Vaughn College of Aeronautics and Technology in Queens; Empire State College, based in Saratoga Springs; and Excelsior College in Albany.

This was a long time coming for the 3,000 Dowling students. The Oakdale school is stuck under $54 million in debt and announced plans to shutdown earlier this year.

After several attempts by the school to find a financial backer to keep them open, Dowling was dealt a major blow when it was announced that they were losing their accreditation.

It is not clear yet how the transfer process will work. Dowling is hosting information seminars this Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday for any students needing help getting to their new school.
