ITHACA, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — An Ithaca College student from Brooklyn is dead and another wounded after a stabbing at Cornell University early Sunday morning.
According to police, two people were stabbed following a fight at the intersection of College Avenue and Campus Road at around 2 a.m. The victim was identified as 19-year-old Anthony Nazaire of Brooklyn.
CBS2’s Steve Langford reported Nazaire lived on Newkirk Avenue in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn. He was a business administration student at the college.
Nazaire’s godfather, Jacques Dorsainvil, told 1010 WINS’ Carol D’Auria that he was the pride of the family and was never in trouble.
“Always played with you, played with his mom like a friend,” Dorsainvil said. “I don’t know how we’re going to deal with this.”
Investigators said several fights took place after a student-organized event at Willard Straight Hall on the Cornell campus which was attended by several hundred people and that’s when Nazaire and another Ithaca student were stabbed.
One victim was flown to Upstate Medical Center and was treated for several stab wounds and since released, police said.
Nazaire was flown to Cayuga Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead.
“All of a sudden, he’s gone,” Dorsainvil said.
Ryan Lombardi, Cornell’s vice president for student and campus life, said the university’s “thoughts and condolences” goes out to Nazaire’s family and friends.
“There is nothing more important than the safety of our community; as such, this incident is deeply disturbing. Please be sure to take care of yourselves and each other throughout the coming days,” Lombardi said in a statement.
Students were shocked over the fatal stabbing.
“This is a campus we all see as a safe place — I see as home and stuff,” one Cornell student said. “For this to happen where we all go to class, where we all live, it’s a shock and it’s a tragedy for sure.”
Ithaca police believe cellphone video taken at the scene could help lead them to the suspects. They’re asking witnesses to come forward with any pictures or video they may have.
Nazaire was supposed to begin his sophomore year on Wednesday.
An investigation is ongoing. There have been no arrests so far.
