NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — A suspect was charged late Tuesday with stabbing a woman to death while the victim pushed a baby in a stroller in Brooklyn.
Shenia Williams, 20, of Brooklyn, was charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon in the stabbing that killed Joann Beauzier, 22, police said. Police sources told CBS2 that Williams is an acquaintance of the victim, and she was picked up near the scene on Lott Avenue.
According to police, 22-year-old Beauzier was pushing her 9-month-old child in a stroller near Bristol Street and Lott Avenue in Brownsville at around 12:45 a.m. when she was approached by two women.
One of the women then stabbed Beauzier in the chest, police said.
The victim was taken to Brookdale University Hopsital and Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.
“Two people came to her aid and somebody called 911,” community advocate Michael Thomas told 1010 WINS’ Glenn Schuck. “Thank God a good Samaritan did come and call 911, but when they got her to the hospital, I guess she bled out and it was too late.”
Lola Bishop, who has lived in the neighborhood for 24 years says she was shocked to wake up to the news.
“Shocking to know you get up in the morning and see blood across the street,” Bishop told CBS2’s Fatima Ramatullah. “I’m fearful of the neighborhood but I’m just concerned of the violence that is going on in the neighborhood — young people being cut down at an early age.”
Neighbors say the woman was getting diapers for her child at the time of the incident.
Authorities are speaking with the child’s father, but say he is not a suspect in the case.
The child is in the care of her grandmother.
Family members were in shock Tuesday.
“She could have a little attitude at times, but she was very loving, very caring,” her stepfather Donelle Harrison said.
Harrison said despite his daughter having a rough upbringing, the young mom was working hard to get her life back together. She had just started a new job working for the parks department.
“Of course it’s cut short over something that we hear could be possibly, be something absolutely ridiculous,” Harrison said.
Neighbors said her death was senseless.
“Nobody deserves to be without a mother,” Gwendolyn Moore said, “She’s doing what a mother would do for her child, and for them to take her away from her child, that’s not right.”
