Some UWS Residents Petition To Have Trump's Name Removed From Building

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Hundreds of Upper West Side residents have signed a petition to strip Donald Trump's name off their building.

As WCBS 880's Alex Silverman reported, the owner is paying attention.

Silverman found one woman, Harriet, beneath the golden awning in the big can't miss letters spelling out "Trump Place." Silverman told her how Marty McKenna, vice president at Equity Residential, confirmed by email that the company will assess the issue when the contract to use the Trump name expires.

A petition to remove Trump's name has now been signed by more than 300 of her fellow tenants.

"Can't wait," Harriet said, "because it's embarrassing. People are really mortified living in the building, having to have that name on our building."

The majority of Trump Place residents who spoke to Silverman were not quite as empathetic.

"Anyone who knows these buildings are not associated with him -- just sold his name," said a woman named Maria. "I don't care for the man, but I'm thrilled to live here."
