NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Officers from the Westchester County Police Department’s Marine Unit were helping a wayward humpback whale on Friday evening when they saw a man jump from the George Washington Bridge, police said.

The officers were escorting the whale, that swam up the Hudson River, back toward New York Harbor shortly before 5:30 p.m.

As the officers watched the whale, they saw a man jump from the bridge and fall into the river below, police said.

The officers were able to pull him aboard the patrol boat and perform CPR.

The man suffered cardiac arrest and was taken to a New Jersey hospital.
